What are Keyboard wedge barcode scanners?
This page explains what a keyboard wedge barcode scanner is, how it works, and the common form factors available.
How a Keywedge Scanner Works
A keyboard wedge barcode scanner converts barcode data into keystrokes and sends them to your computer as if you had typed the characters on your keyboard. Any application that accepts text input -- including xAssets -- will receive the scanned barcode data directly into whichever field has focus.
The scan-to-keystroke process happens in milliseconds, making it faster and more accurate than manual data entry. The scanner can also be configured to send a Carriage Return (Enter) after each barcode, which automatically triggers actions like searching.
Why "Keyboard Wedge"?
The term "wedge" comes from the original design where the device physically connected between the keyboard and the computer, sitting "in between" (wedging into) the keyboard cable. Modern keyboard wedge scanners typically connect via USB cable and do not require a physical keyboard to be connected.

Connection Types
| Connection | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| USB wired | No batteries, instant connection, most reliable | Limited range, tethered to computer |
| Wireless (USB dongle) | Freedom of movement, simple pairing | Requires batteries or charging, dongle can be lost |
| Bluetooth | Works with computers, tablets, and phones | Pairing can be more complex, battery required |
Common Form Factors
A wide variety of makes and models are available:
- Handheld gun-style -- the most common. Point and scan. Some include stands for hands-free operation.
- Pocket/mini scanners -- small enough to carry in a pocket. Ideal for mobile work.
- Presentation scanners -- designed to sit on a desk and scan items passed over them. Useful for check-out/check-in workflows.
Some models include accessories such as stands, cradles, and chargers. For xAssets use, any scanner that supports the CODE128 barcode standard and can be configured to send a Carriage Return suffix will work. See Setting Up a Keywedge Scanner for configuration details.
