Find Computers Running a Product

The reverse of "what is on this computer?" — when you need to know which machines run a specific product. This is the workhorse query for vendor audits, license remediation, and product retirement.

The Standard Query

  1. From the Software menu, choose Computers by Software Title → Computers by Software Product — Installed.
  2. The list shows every catalog product with an installation count.
  3. Click a product to see the per-machine list.

The per-machine list includes:

  • Computer name
  • Custodian (current user)
  • Department / Location / Cost Centre
  • Date of last discovery (when the install was last seen)
  • Whether a license is allocated to this machine for this product

Variants for Different Needs

Query Use For
Computers by Software Product — Installed Per-product, considers catalog entries (the standard view)
Computers by Software Title — Primary Per-title, only Primary-classified titles
Computers by Software Title — All Per-title, includes Free and Unknown — use sparingly on large databases

The Title-based queries operate on raw discovery data; the Product-based query operates on the catalog. Use the Product view for compliance work; use the Title view when investigating recognition issues.

Warning: The "Computers by Software Title — All" query can take a long time to run in large installations because the left-hand title list may contain thousands of entries. Use the Primary view when possible.

When to Use This for Compliance Work

Three scenarios:

Vendor audit response. "Show us every machine running Microsoft SQL Server 2017 Standard." Open the per-product view, filter by license-status if needed, export the list.

Under-license remediation. A product is red on the Licensing Position. You have two options: buy more, or remove the software from machines that do not need it. The per-product list with custodian and department lets you triage which machines are candidates for uninstall.

Product retirement. You are retiring a product (sunsetting an old tool). The per-product list is your hit list of machines where the uninstall needs to happen.

Filtering and Export

The grid supports the standard query filters. Common filters:

Goal Filter
Machines without a license allocated Allocated = false
Active machines only Status = In Service
Recent installs Date Installed within last 90 days
Specific department Department = X

Use Query → Export to Excel to send the list out for procurement or remediation tracking.
