Software Updates

xAssets maintains a centralised software recognition database that is regularly updated with new titles, corrections, and classification changes. These updates ensure that newly discovered software is correctly recognised, classified, and included in compliance reporting.

How Updates Work

Recognition data updates are delivered automatically through a web service and applied each time discovered data is loaded into the database. No manual action is required -- the process is built into the standard data loading workflow.

What Updates Include

Update Type Description
New titles Software titles that were not previously in the recognition database are added, so they will be classified on the next load
Classification changes Titles that were previously classified incorrectly (e.g., Free instead of Primary) are corrected
Name normalisation Cleaned-up display names for software titles that had inconsistent naming across different installations
Licensing flags Updates to whether a title requires a licence, reflecting changes in vendor licensing models

Prerequisites

For on-premises installations, the recognition update service requires:

  • An active annual support subscription with xAssets
  • Internet connectivity from the application server to the xAssets update service (or a configured proxy)

If the subscription has lapsed or the server cannot reach the update service, recognition data will become stale and newly discovered titles may go unrecognised.

Verifying Updates Are Working

If you notice an increasing number of unrecognised software titles (see Unrecognised Software), this may indicate that updates are not being applied. Check:

  1. The application server has internet connectivity to the xAssets update endpoint
  2. Your support subscription is current
  3. The data loading process (Load Now) is completing without errors

Submitting Titles for Recognition

You can accelerate the recognition of specific titles by submitting your unrecognised software to xAssets (see Unrecognised Software). Submitted titles are reviewed and included in future updates, benefiting all xAssets customers.
