Barcode Audits

This page introduces barcode audits using a keywedge scanner and directs you to the full audit documentation in the xAssets Barcoding Guide.

What Is a Barcode Audit?

A barcode audit is the process of verifying that physical assets match your xAssets database by scanning their barcodes and comparing the results to expected records. Audits can identify:

  • Found assets -- scanned and present where expected
  • Missing assets -- expected but not scanned, potentially lost or moved
  • Unexpected assets -- scanned but not in the expected list, possibly misplaced or unrecorded

Using a Keywedge Scanner for Audits

Keywedge scanners are well-suited for small to medium audits where you have a computer or laptop available at the audit location. During a keywedge audit:

  1. You create an audit in xAssets, selecting the audit type and expected assets.
  2. You start the scanning dialog, which displays expected and scanned asset lists.
  3. You scan each asset's barcode. The scanner types the barcode into the scanning field.
  4. Each scanned asset moves from the expected list to the scanned list in real time.
  5. When scanning is complete, you review the results and accept or reject changes.

Limitations for Keywedge Audits

  • You must have a live connection to xAssets during scanning (no offline capability).
  • The xAssets browser window must remain in focus throughout the scanning process.
  • For large audits (hundreds of assets across multiple locations), an intelligent scanner with offline capability is more practical.
