ServiceNow CMDB Integration

Populate and maintain your ServiceNow CMDB from xAssets discovery data
Automatically create CIs, reconcile manufacturers and models, and push hardware and software details

Announcing the ServiceNow Integration

xAssets now integrates directly with the ServiceNow CMDB. Assets discovered by xAssets Network Discovery or managed in xAssets IT Asset Management can be pushed into ServiceNow as Configuration Items, keeping your CMDB current without manual data entry.

The integration uses the ServiceNow Table API and works against any ServiceNow instance, including dev, test and production. No ServiceNow MID Server or scripted REST endpoint is required.

What Gets Pushed

  • Computer CIs (cmdb_ci_computer) - name, serial, manufacturer, model, OS, IP, MAC, discovery source
  • Network adapters (cmdb_ci_network_adapter) - per-NIC records linked to each CI
  • File systems (cmdb_ci_file_system) - disks, capacity and free space
  • Software catalog (cmdb_ci_spkg) and install records (cmdb_software_instance)
  • Reference data (core_company, cmdb_model, OS choice lists, discovery_source)

Automatic Reference Data Reconciliation

ServiceNow does not normalise reference data - "Dell", "Dell Inc." and "Dell Computer Corp" are three separate core_company records. Most integrations either create duplicates or require manual cleanup.

xAssets solves this by running its own asset recognition engine in reverse:

  1. Fetch ServiceNow's existing manufacturers and models
  2. Run xAssets recognition on the ServiceNow values to resolve them to canonical names
  3. Build a mapping table from canonical xAssets name to ServiceNow sys_id
  4. When pushing an asset, look up the correct sys_id so the CI links to the right existing record

The result is a clean CMDB that reuses existing records rather than proliferating duplicates. New manufacturers and models are created only when a genuine new entry is needed.

Scoped Reference Fetch

Production ServiceNow instances often hold 10,000+ model records. xAssets only pulls the reference data it needs - typically a few hundred rows scoped to the manufacturers present in the current asset list. This keeps the integration fast and unobtrusive on large tenants.

How It Works

  • Authentication uses a ServiceNow integration user (Basic Auth over the Table API)
  • Credentials are held in an xAssets Credential Pack - no keys in scripts
  • The push runs on demand or on a schedule, against all assets or a filtered subset
  • Each run is transactional per asset - partial failures are logged and retried

Typical Use Cases

  • Organisations using ServiceNow for ITSM but lacking a reliable CMDB data source
  • Teams migrating away from SCCM/Intune-only CMDB imports and wanting full network discovery coverage
  • Customers running xAssets Discovery alongside ServiceNow who want a single source of truth
  • Environments where the existing CMDB has drifted and needs a clean re-sync

Included in xAssets

The ServiceNow integration is included at no extra cost in xAssets IT Asset Management and xAssets Network Discovery.

How to Get Started

  1. Request a free xAssets instance
  2. Provide ServiceNow instance URL and integration user credentials
  3. xAssets will help you configure and test the push
  4. Schedule or run on demand
