IT Asset Management Configuration
xAssets products are highly configurable. This page outlines the types of configuration available and which guides cover each area. Configuration can be performed at installation time and adjusted at any point afterward -- the system is designed to evolve with your organisation's requirements.
Overview
Configuration in xAssets is organised into three levels, each requiring different skills and covered in different documentation. Understanding which level applies to your needs will help you find the right guide quickly.
Installation Guide
For engineers and server administrators who install and maintain the application server:
- Setting up an initial installation (IIS, SQL Server, database creation)
- Linking to Active Directory and SCCM
- Configuring IIS virtual directories and application pools
- Database backup and maintenance
- SSL certificate configuration
Tip: Installation is typically a one-time activity performed by your IT operations team. Day-to-day users do not need the Installation Guide.
Configuration Guide
For implementation specialists who shape the system to each organisation's requirements. This is the most commonly referenced guide after the system is installed.
Standard configuration:
- Creating queries, reports, and charts to display asset data in the formats you need
- Working with menu items and forms to control the user interface
- Creating and securing profiles to provide different views for different user groups
- Setting up users, user groups, and security permissions
- Importing and exporting data using standard import templates
- Configuring specification data (custom fields) and default field values
- Configuring email notifications for alerts and automated communications
- Configuring discovery scenarios and collection servers
Advanced configuration:
- Creating new asset-centric functionality using menus, forms, and transformations
- SQL-based queries and reports for complex data analysis
- Batch processing and stored procedures for automated operations
- Custom drag-and-drop behaviour for specialised workflows
- Integration with external applications using the transformation engine
- SCCM, Active Directory, and "Load Now" configuration for data integration
- XDSL discovery scripting and AMSX transformation scripting for programmatic control
- Transformation triggers and database triggers for event-driven automation
Tip: Standard configuration covers the vast majority of customisation needs. You only need advanced configuration for highly specialised requirements or integrations with non-standard external systems.
Developer Guide
For programmers with Visual Studio, .NET, and SQL Server expertise:
- Writing XCS scripts to modify client-side interface behaviour (e.g., auto-populating fields, custom validation)
- Accessing the xAssets REST API for programmatic asset data access
- Building applications that consume or expose xAssets Web Services
